Meet Aria, mother of Paloma

Paloma is a six-year-old girl who is non-verbal due to a neurodevelopmental disorder called Phelan-McDermid Syndrome. She is learning to communicate using a speech generating device. This helps her understand others and get her message across.

Aria is her mother.

Aria can see a clear difference in Paloma’s behaviour now that she is able to communicate what she wants. Prior to learning to use her device, she was often very frustrated.

She had certain behaviours, like biting, as a quick and easy, instant way to show her frustrations and her anger.

Aria says her daughter has overcome a lot of barriers by learning to use AAC for communication. She is now able to participate in so much more.

It's so important to share and connect with people. And you need communication to do that.
